Current Teen Volunteer Opportunities at FTPL:


Teen Action Group (TAG)

Help plan and create teen programming, write book reviews, decorate the teen room, and more!
  1. When does volunteering take place? Throughout the year.
  2. Who can join TAG? TAG is open to students ages 12-17 who reside in Franklin Township (Somerset County, NJ) and have an active juvenile Franklin Township Library card.
  3. How can I become a TAG volunteer?  To apply, fill out the form here. Within a few days of filling out the form, the teen librarian will email a contract that the teen and parent/guardian must review, sign and return. Once the contract is received, the teen librarian will email full details on how to earn hours.

Types of TAG volunteer tasks include: 

Create original content for the library’s social media for teen

Write book reviews to be displayed in the teen space or on social media

Create decorations for the Young Adult Room.

Write letters to seniors in nursing homes and/or deployed soldiers.

Help to decide, prepare and to execute teen programs

Clerical work such as cutting paper, checking supply stocks, straightening shelves, etc.

The opportunity to advance to the TAG Leadership Council (TLC).

You must apply and receive acceptance from the Teen Librarian before submitting any volunteer work.

Teen Reading Buddies

Help a child practice their reading skills.

  1. When does volunteering take place? Summer (July-August and 1 training session in June).
  2. Who can be a Reading Buddy?  Teens entering grades 8-12 in September who are excited about helping children practice reading. Teens must also reside in Franklin Township and have a Franklin Township Library card.
  3. How can I become a Teen Reading Buddy?  Applications for summer 2024 have now closed. Thank you for your interest.

Teen Kindness Club

At this monthly event, teens between the ages of 12 – 17 can attend to earn to an hour of community service.

Each month we do a different community service related activity such as writing letters to veterans, making cat toys for the animal shelter or writing cards to hospitalized kids. There is no application process to attend the Kindness Club. Please register for each individual meeting so we know how many people to expect.

Summer Virtual Volunteering for Teens

Summer Virtual Volunteering is open to students ages 12-17 who reside in Franklin Township and have an active juvenile Franklin Township Library card.

You must apply and receive acceptance from the Teen Librarian before submitting any volunteer work.

Franklin Township teens (ages 12-17) are invited to apply for virtual volunteering at the library this summer. Applications are now closed for Summer 2024. Have a great summer!

Youth Services Teen Volunteering

Open to students ages 12-17 years old who reside in Franklin Township. Positions are available on weekdays, ending no later than 5pm and take place at the Demott Lane Branch.

To apply: limited paper applications are available in the Children’s Department in September, January and May.  Call 732-873-8700 option 4 for more information.
