Mindfulness In Print

If you are attending our meditation sessions this week (teens and adults) or are just interested in learning more about the art of mindfulness and meditation there are a bevy of new and classic titles available right here at the library (in a variety of formats)!

There are few better starting places for your journey towards mindfulness than with the works of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn; founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

mindfullnessbeginnersWherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life (Hoopla audiobook, eLibrary) offers a straightforward and deeply personal look at the art of mindful meditation. Mindfulness for Beginners: Reclaiming the Present Moment and Your Life (Hoopla ebook, eLibrary), despite its title, offers a deep dive into the spiritual and historical background of mindfulness while still offering straight forward advice for its practice. Finally, several of Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s guided mediation audiobooks are available via the Hoopla service and could prove a valuable tool (Series 1, Series 2, Series 3).

In Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Beginners, Guy Armstrong (eLibrary) looks closely at one of the most basic, and perhaps most confusing, of meditation principals: the Buddhist notion of emptiness.

After a televised on air panic attack ABC News anchor Dan Harris set off on a journey of self discovery. That journey, and all of its twists and turns, is chronicled in his book 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found a Self-Help That Actually Works (eLibrary, Hoopla audiobook). fidgetyskepticsHarris recently released a follow-up volume, Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-to Book (book, audiobook), which offers a more straight forward approach to meditation and its many benefits.

Of course these books represent only a drop in the vast sea of material written about mediation and mindfulness. If you are interested in further reading (or listening) on meditation and mindfulness stop by the Reference Desk and one of our librarians can help you. The library will be offering Meditation classes in the evening one Wednesday each month so be sure to check our event calendar to sign up!
