- What is the Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause sickness in humans and animals. Different strains are known to cause respiratory illnesses and colds in humans, and are also the cause of more severe illnesses such as MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). - What is COVID-19?
This is the most recently discovered strain of Coronavirus, which first appeared in Wuhan, China in 2019. This strain and disease were unknown prior to this outbreak. - What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
The most commonly associated symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath/difficulty breathing. - How does COVID-19 spread?
This strain is thought to have been first transferred to the human population from animals, but it now is spread from person to person. The virus is believed to be spread between people in relatively close personal contact (within about 6 feet) by respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. “It also may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.” – CDC - How can I protect myself?
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are unavailable. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and avoid close contact with those who are sick.
