The FIFA World Cup 2018 is underway and nearing it’s finale! Held every 4 years since 1930, the World Cup is one of the most prestigious and widely viewed sporting events on Earth. This year’s Cup matches will be held at multiple locations all across Russia (the host country), lasting from June 14th to July 15th. The Library has put together a display featuring books about “the beautiful game” and the host country, Russia. Here are a few standout titles:
Why Soccer Matters by Pelé
“The world’s most popular sport goes by many names—soccer, football, the beautiful game—but fans have always agreed on one thing: The greatest player of all time was Pelé . . .
Now, for the first time, the legendary star and humanitarian explores the sport’s recent history and provides new insights into the game. With unparalleled openness, he shares his most inspiring experiences, heartwarming stories, and hard-won wisdom.” -Taken from Amazon.com
A History of the World Cup: 1930-2014 by Clemente A. Lisi
“In A History of the World Cup: 1930-2014, Clemente A. Lisi chronicles this international phenomenon, providing vivid accounts of individual games from the tournament’s origins in 1930 to modern times. It features a glossary of terms, statistics for each competition, photos, and profiles of the most memorable—and controversial—figures of the sport, including Diego Maradona, Juste Fontaine, Franz Beckenbauer, Mario Kempes, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and, of course, Pelé.” -Taken from Amazon.com
A History of Twentieth-Century Russia by Robert Service
“Russia has had an extraordinary history in the twentieth century. As the first Communist society, the USSR was both an admired model and an object of fear and hatred to the rest of the world . . .
A History of Twentieth-Century Russia is the first work to use the mass of material that has become available in the documentary collections, memoirs, and archives over the past decade. It is an extraordinarily lucid, masterful account of the most complex and turbulent period in Russia’s long history.” -Taken from Amazon.com
