April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. It is a time set aside each year to help raise awareness about important issues that our pets and animal friends face every day. To honor this, the Library was home to the Second Chance for Animals donation bin throughout the month. By donating, patrons and staff were supplying an all-volunteer organization that helps to enhance the lives, adoption rates, and experiences of animals living in shelters throughout Somerset County, NJ.
By the end of the month the bin was nearly overflowing!
Here were a few notable items that we found in the bin:
- 62 cans of cat food.
- 25 sponges.
- 12 pet toys.
- 23 washcloths and hand towels.
- 7 bags of dog bones and dog treats.
- 3 blankets.
- 1 bag of rabbit food.
- And much, much more.
We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to everyone who donated! Thank you for helping to improve the lives of our animal friends!
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month might be over, but helping animals in need is a year-round pursuit. To find out how you can continue to help, click here for more information on Second Chance for Animals!

Will you take old bath mats, sheets, pillow cases?
Hi Mara,
This post is a few years old, so we unfortunately aren’t hosting the Second Chance for Animals bin at this time. For more information on donating items, please call the shelter at (732) 748-7232.
