The Next Stage Ensemble of the Shakespeare Theatre of NJ returns on Friday, July 7th at 2:00 PM to perform an abridged production of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.
In Padua in the 1500s, Baptista, a wealthy merchant and father to two daughters of starkly different temperaments, has declared that no one shall wed the young and kind Bianca until his sharp-tongued older daughter, Katherina, is wed. Lucentio of Pisa, one of many suitors to Bianca, devises a scheme to disguise himself as a tutor to spend time with her. Petruchio of Verona arrives in Padua to visit his friend Hortensio, who also pines for Bianca, and hearing of Katherina’s large dowry, vows to woo the ‘wild-cat” daughter. Things are just getting started in this sharp comedy of deceit, disguise and trickery.
