This week’s staff pick, The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe, was published in 1979 and covers the space race with particular attention given to The Mercury Seven: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, the late John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. Wolfe compares the astronauts in training to the test pilots of Edwards AFB which included the rivals Chuck Yeagar and Scott Crossfield. This National Book Award Winning title is a rightful classic and an important chronicle of America’s attempts to reach the stars.
